Freedom Friendly

This site is
Freedom Friendly.

Learn Why.

BernsteinForPresident.com utilizes and supports Free Software.  By saying Free Software, I am not talking about the cost.  Instead, I am referencing the freedom it grants to users.  Users of software should all be able to do certain things.  They should be able to run the program, modify the program, and redistribute modified or un-modified copies of the program.  The server that powers BernsteinForPresident.com runs exclusively Free Software.  BernsteinForPresident.com is based on the Joomla! framework, which is also Free Software.  All of the applications I release on this site are also free software.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I care?

Free Software directly benefits the well-being of the world.  One of its greatest benefits is preventing abusive monopolies.  There are currently a couple too many software monopolies in the world. (I have a feeling you know which ones I am talking about.)  These companies are driven by money, and not by doing what is best for you.  Therefore, decisions are always based solely money, and not on advancing technology for society.  What is the point of a really cool invention if nobody can ever improve on it?  In the same way, what good is a flashy piece of computer software if nobody can get it to do what they want?  It is not wrong to want to make money, but it is wrong to do it in abusive ways.

Free Software has also been used to power a huge number of computer donation programs.  It is the best type of software for education, because anyone who wants to learn how it works is free to do so.  That is why it is used by organizations such as OLPC and The Helios Project to provide computers to impoverished students.

Isn't that called "Open Source"?

Free Software and Open Source are very similar, so sometimes people get the two mixed up.  Open Source mainly refers to the usage of Free Software in business.  Open Source focuses on how to financially prosper with Free Software, while ignoring the freedoms it gives to you.  Which one to use depends on your personal preferences and priorities.  I personally see freedom and the advancement of technology as more important than money, so I use the term "Free Software".
